I found myself short of another Sookie Stackhouse book to read, so I read this. It too has shapeshifting and beautiful women with inconstant affections. Reading it I was struck with the profound horror of the story. It is told so simply, so matter-of-factly, that the bald result is both horrifying and heartbreaking. It reminded me a lot of Frankenstein, where the creature is viewed in equal measure with loathsome disgust and sorrowful pity.
